May 16, 2012-Seven Emporia State track and field athletes have been named All-Region by the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Six of the seven will be competing at the NCAA Division II National Championships May 24-26 in Pueblo, Colo.
The top five from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region’s top three earned the All-Region distinction for the 2012 outdoor season. Four women earned All-Region – Sara Dunkin, Carmen King, Katie Mona, and Deja Jackson. Three Hornet men made the cut – Andrew Etheridge, Donald Wilcox and Cody Miller.
Dunkin is ranked fifth in the nation and second in the South Central Region in the javelin. She tossed a school record 149-09 (45.65m) at the ESU Spring Open.
King is ranked sixth in the nation and second in the South Central Region in the 100m. She ran a personal best 11.74 at the MIAA Championships that ranks second all-time at ESU.
Mona is ranked 13
th in the nation and second in the South Central Region in the 1500m. She ran a 4:29.00 at the KU Relays to rank second all-time at ESU.
Jackson is ranked 18
th in the nation and fourth in the South Central Region in the discus. She is ranked fourth all-time at ESU with a throw of 156-08 (47.75m) at the MIAA Championships.
Wilcox is ranked tenth in the nation and fourth in the South Central Region in the long jump. He jumped 24-06.75 (7.47m) at the MIAA Championships to rank fourth all-time at ESU.
Etheridge is ranked 12
th in the nation and fourth in the South Central Region in the 110m hurdles. The defending national champion ran a season’s best 14.09 in the prelims at the MIAA Championships. He ran 14.02 to win the national championship last year and ranks second all-time at ESU.
Miller is ranked 80
th in the nation and fifth in the South Central Region in the 800m. He ran a personal best 1:53.73 at the Sam Williams Twilight Qualifier. He is the only Hornet on the all-region team to not make the national championships.
