June 4, 2013-The 2012-13 athletic year ended with another record setting weekend for the Emporia State Athletic Department. After the first review of the books, the ESU Athletics Golf Tournament and Auction netted $51,400 from the combined auction on Friday night and the golf action on Saturday.
“The annual athletics auction and golf tourney is a great complement to the Now and Forever Campaign that has been gaining momentum this year,” said Emporia State Senior Associate Athletic Director Shane Shivley. “We can’t thank our fans enough as they share our vision for the future of Hornet Athletics.”
The team of Brian DeWitt, Jaime Sauder, John Stone and Garin Higgins won the first flight of the tournament on Saturday. The foursome of Derek Dick, Eric Anderson, Toby McCollough and Brock Schwartz won the second flight.
Just over $40,000 was raised on Friday night as 42 items were auctioned off live and another 33 items went in the silent auction.
Proceeds from the golf tournament and auction benefit the 15 individual sports programs and student-athletes at Emporia State. With the Lady Hornet basketball team advancing to the regional final this year, the ESU Athletic program has had at least one team finish the year in the top ten nationally for 11 straight years. In that time ten different programs have placed in the top ten nationally.
