January 11, 2017-The Emporia State women posted three provisional qualifiers as they had two event champions and four runner-up performances at the Shocker Prelude hosted by Wichita State. The Hornet men had one provisional, three event champions and two runners-up on the day. In the team standings the Hornet women placed second and the men third.
Jazmin Williams moved into the top 20 on the national list with a leap of 18-06.50 (5.65m) to win the long jump. She is currently ranked 18
th in the nation in the event.
Morgan Gilliland had a pair of provisional qualifiers that were both good enough for second place. She had a mark of 45-01 (13.74m) in the shot put and a toss of 55-08.50 (16.98m) in the weight throw.
Iva Shepherd and Catalina Bissell finished 1-2 in the women's pole vault. Shepherd cleared 11-02.50 (3.42m) to win the event while Bissell went 10-02.75 (3.12m) to place second. Shepherd is now tied with Bissell and Allison Meethe for fourth on the Emporia State all-time list.
The other second place finish went to Jazmin Williams, Elizabeth Blevins, Brianna Schmitz, and Sophie Hayes who ran 4:04.44 to place second in the women's 4x400m relay.
Duke Tibbs had the only provisional on the track for Emporia State. He ran a 6.82 in the prelims of the men's 60m in his only race of the meet. He is currently ranked fifth in the nation in the 60m.
Thomas LaRoche had the only individual championship on the track as he ran 1:55.47 to capture the men's 800m.
The foursome of Taysean Goodwin, Kyle Evans, Wyatt Sander, and Boone Cady won the 4x400m relay in 3:21.92 while LaRoche, Jared Reinke, Luke Stenzel, and Murad Baheyadeen ran 8:18.09 to win the 4x800m relay as the Hornets swept both relays.
Canien Burnett had the other runner-up finish, clearing 6-04.75 (1.95m) to place second in the men's high jump.
The next action for the Hornets will be the UCM Invitational on January 20 in Warrensburg, Mo.
